Welcome everybody,

Please forgive me writing in English but I come from far away and cannot speak your language. I hope this is not a problem.

I've registered at this site because it seems to be connected with the topic of GPS navigation. I must say registering was fun - no idea what the confirmation email means

Anyhow, I need your help. I'm going to visit Indonesia quite soon and I'd like to take my GPS navigation with me. It will probably be very useful. However the software I'm using does not have any map of this region. I've searched a bit and it seems that the only reasonable solution is to use one of your local GPS programs. Could anyone tell me where I can one of those? Or possibly just a name so I can search for it.
Or maybe you use one of the international ones that have maps of more than one country - if so please tell me the name of the program. The only program I've found is from Garmin but I cannot find any details of the supported region...

Actually, anything will be helpful - I'm quite stuck.

I also apologize if this is not the correct category - I don't know what 'perangkat' means :P

If it's important - I will be traveling to Jakarta and later to Semarang. So I'm looking for maps of Java and possibly the neighbor islands as well.

Thank you very much for help and once again, sorry for writing in English.

Best regards,
QmQ

Hi QmQ,
First thing first: 'perangkat' means 'equipment', so in a way you've already posting in the right category...

Where you from? Do you currently have GPS equipment handy? If you already have Garmin GPS (whether it's Nuvi series, handheld series such as 60/Vista/Colorado, or Garmin Mobile XT installed in your PDA/smartphone) - the easiest way would be to buy Garmin City Navigator Indonesia map (covers Java and Bali islands w/ est. price USD 90-100) or Garmin City Navigator SE Asia map (covers Indonesia, Malaysia/Singapore, Thailand, and HK/Macau for est. USD 150).
The caveat is while CN Indonesia map is widely available in most GPS shops in Indonesia, at present most of them do not have CN SE Asia map in stock as this product is relatively new - however, you should be able to buy this online from Garmin site.

If you have other GPS equipment (i.e. Mio, Magellan, or Tomtom) - you may be out of luck as I am not aware that they sell Indonesia map for this device separately.

If you currently do not have GPS equipment, when you come to Jakarta you can simply go to one of the electronic mall nearby and buy a new gps unit. I would recommend to buy Garmin Nuvi 200 or 205 as this unit is cheap and small, should be perfect for traveling. It will cost you around USD 240 and already included w/ CN Indonesia map.

Just let us know should you required further assistance...

Hi, thanks for such a fast reply

I already have a GPS set composing of a Bluetooth receiver and my palmtop. So I don't really want to buy anything else. And so, I might not be in the right category after all. Something like 'GPS software' would be more it

What I'm looking for is either some local GPS software or a map for one of the bigger programs. I'm from Poland and currently only use a polish program because of it's local map's superiority over all the international ones. However I'm thinking about buying another program which I would first use on my trip to Java and later - who knows

So what you recommend is Garmin with one of those maps? I understand that the 'Indonesia' version covers a smaller area but is more detailed? I'd prefer something like that. I will check this on their website again, but first hand knowledge is better

What about local software? Here in Poland I could use TomTom, Mio, ... but none of them gets even close to our local maps - most of them just have big towns + main roads.
That's why I don't use them. I suppose it's the same everywhere. Well, maybe except USA where local equals native
Anyway - what about local programs? How detailed are their maps?

Thank you very much for help!

QmQ

Hi QmQ,

first of all, most of the thread in this forum and discussion uses Garmin as the main software for operating the map (not all though).

we'll help you to find necessary files u need. as for the palmtop, do u refer it as the Palm OS, or is it a PPC (PDA)?

there is a local software called "Nusa map" but it is pretty hard to use and I don't think it will support Palm OS. the garmin map covers most of Jakarta's road (I think) and probably most roads in Semarang city as well (not sure coz I never use my GPS there).

anyway, if you need more help u can contact me here or mail me at marvynhendrata@yahoo.com

cheers

bsuroyo, (GMT) 16:49:27 Sabtu, 19 Juli 2008)

Like mbon have said, NusaMap should have more complete coverage than other Indonesia maps product. It's coming from a well respected local map developer company which already operating for years now. However, NusaMap only runs on pocket PC based PDA, not sure if it (will also) runs on other OS.

IMO, Garmin map for Indonesia (City Navigator Indonesia) is detail enough for navigation purposes. It covers in details most of big cities in Java/Bali (definitely Jakarta and Semarang), and details enough for small cities. And the good thing about Garmin map is it will runs on several Garmin based GPS devices - from PC (GMPC), dedicated PND (Nuvi/StreetPilot/Zumo), handheld (Vista/Colorado), PDA (PPC or Palm), even on smartphone (GMXT).

If you already use pocket PC based PDA now, you have several choices:
- download Garmin Mobile XT software (for free from Garmin website), then buy CN Indonesia map later on.
- or purchase NusaMap (check at http://www.nusa.co.id/NusaMap/index.htm).

QmQ, (GMT) 18:24:22 Sabtu, 19 Juli 2008)

Ah, sorry, I now see that wasn't clear enough. The device I use is a Pocket PC - HP iPAQ.

Well, about this NusaMap - does it come in English?
But I think Garmin will do. Especially since you say most of you use it. Plus it supports other maps if I ever need any.

I've never heard about a free GPS software and frankly I don't see a way to get it from Garmins site for free. The first Google result is:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=11413
which is $100

What am I missing here?

bsuroyo, (GMT) 02:15:53 Minggu, 20 Juli 2008)

Hi QmQ, I believe that's not correct. Most of Garmin software can be downloaded for free from Garmin website, but you will still need to purchase the detail map.

You can download Garmin Mobile XT/GMXT software here:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/downloadsUpdates.jsp?product=010-00579-00&cID=139&pID=10901

As you use Pocket PC, you will need to download the following:
1. Garmin Mobile XT for Windows Mobile Ver. 4.20.50w,
2. Garmin Mobile XT Free Basemap, and
3. Garmin Mobile XT Support Files (if you need to have voice navigation + help files)
to use Garmin Mobile XT in your Pocket PC device.

Be advise that in order to run GMXT with details map, you will need to unlock GMXT w/ one of the following:
- use Garmin GPS (i.e. Garmin bluetooth 10 or 10x), or
- use City Navigator map (i.e. CN Indonesia)

So perhaps the cheapest and easiest route for you is to install GMXT w/ your current HP Ipaq + BT GPS now, and purchase CN Indonesia map once you've arrived in Jakarta.

I wrote a short comparison on BT GPS/GMXT before. It's written in Indonesian language, but perhaps the picture in it will give you an idea of GMXT installed in HP Ipaq PDA. Here is the link:

wow, bsuroyo is the man.

anyway, what bsuroyo said is correct, QmQ, you need to search a little bit on garmin's official website because I personally downloaded the program on the official website, and it works. as for the map, u actually need to buy since you need the license key.

but again, there are some "nice" people out there who share indonesian maps for all of us to use.

*I dont know if I'm being sarcastic or not haha

anyway, for the NusaMap, it is in English version, but still for me,I'd recommend Garmin. I'd say you take a look to bsuroyo's link. It's very useful and pretty straight forward. unless you need some translation just tell us here.

don't give up QmQ. I've been through your position too few months ago =)

QmQ, (GMT) 19:24:11 Minggu, 20 Juli 2008)

OK, thanks a great lot!
So the choice is Garmin - I will take a look at the link and download the software.

As for the maps - I'd probably prefer to have them installed before I go. The 'setup all and just install the map when youre there' scenario is nice, but it's the nature of such ideas. This nature also has a 'something must go wrong' option built in

Maybe I'm overreacting a bit, but when I do something like that I usually land in deep sh*t by some wicked way of life. For example I once went on a trip and I badly needed my GPS navigation. I took care of virtually everything. And what happened? The PPC turned on by itself and somehow the auto off after 3 min option did not work and voila - all data gone. Maps, software, all windows settings...everything

But anyway - I'll look into the links and probably post here later on.

Thanks a lot!

QmQ

OK, I've downloaded GMXT.

I've also found this:
http://www.temp2escape.com/software-drivers/garmin-mobile-xt-with-non-garmin-receiver-ppc

It's a guide for installing it on a non-Garmin device. It lists files I need:

* Que.exe
* sw.unl
* GarminMobileXTforWindowsMobile_41040w.exe
* GarminMobileXTSupportFiles_4xxxx.exe
* GarminMobileXTFreeBasemap_4xxxx.exe
* gmapsupp.img (Malaysia)

So, I have the three GarminMobileXT*.exe files from Garmin. Where do I get the first two ones? They didn't write on that site...

Also, is the last file the map? I've never used Garmin and I see that people somehow create the maps themselves. Is that possible? If so, how is it possible? I must admit - I don't get this - the only thing I could make myself is an image of the area (using Google Maps or something), but that's just a low quality picture - not even close to a GPS map... What about all the rest?
I definitely need this explained

Thanks and regards,
QmQ

Sw.unl jest jeden do przechowywania klucza / numer seryjny urządzenia, dzięki którym Twoje urządzenie współpracuje z braku garmin GPS Bluetooth (inne marki GPS Bluetooth). Zawsze możesz go kupić później, jeśli chcesz ją i używać go regularnie.

Pojawi się więcej pomóc, odwiedzając ten polski gps forum, myślę: http://www.garniak.pl/index.php

@QMQ...You are welcome to our beatiful paradise islands.
@Samuel...Yes man, You are definitely right.
@Trek...Why don't u PM QMQ instead in order to help your fellow Polish friend. We are indeed trying to help QMQ.
No offence intended are OK...So Admin please delete such a post

mbon, (GMT) 11:17:17 Senin, 21 Juli 2008)

QmQ, Que.exe is the .exe file to run garmin mobile XT, so it is supposed to be there when u run the installer. whereas sw.unl is the unlock key for the program. which is you need to purchase the program for the key

QmQ, (GMT) 12:36:38 Senin, 21 Juli 2008)

Well, Google sucks at Polish, trust me I had to read that 3 times to understand.

Anyway, thanks trek - I'll check that site.
Samuel - what's illegal about asking? He's not sending me software or anything.

So I now what is what now. Except for the .img file. What's that? Is that the map (picture+list of roads+POIs+all the stuff) or just an image, like from Google Earth?

I do hope they're paradise

mbon, (GMT) 12:44:36 Senin, 21 Juli 2008)

.IMG is the file extension for garmin map. gmapsupp.img is the detailed map for cities such as jakarta. whereas gmapbmap.img is the base map for all around the world

trek, (GMT) 14:57:02 Senin, 21 Juli 2008)

@QmQ:
So, google sucks at Polish eh? Well, onto my broken english then..

@SamuelJRMandang & KreatifAkuisisi:
I was merely trying to answer QmQ's question about sw.unl. AFAIK, it wouldn't be easy or even possible for him (or all of us for that matter) to obtain that file by a legal means even when he wants to. You're most welcome to correct my assumption, perhaps by showing me where should we purchase such a file from garmin site? As for the hint on how to look for information about the map using google, most likely he would stumble across illegal links anyway when he tries to use innocent keywords such as 'java map garmin' for instance. So please keep it cool guys, we are all trying to help him here.

KreatifAkuisisi, (GMT) 16:58:13 Senin, 21 Juli 2008)

Allright trek, if you are willing to help him out. My aplogy then. I don't understand that kind of language,so thank you for explaining, we would like to keep this forum as clean as possible that we don't want this site got blocked.
This site has helped us alot especially me that learn GPS from zero point at the beginning.
You are all very welcome then.
